The SPORES exhibition - a collection of the greatest works by contemporary Polish artists – has been launched. In the bare interiors of the Szczecin office building OXYGEN you can watch an unusual presentation of works from the Regional Collection of Zachęta Contemporary Art Association in Szczecin.
There are over 60 works of art presented at the SPORES exhibition: sculptures, photographs, DVD films, paintings and installations that have never been presented before in such a number and configuration. A lot of them will be shown in Szczecin for the first time.
The works of art which have been gathered look outstanding in the cool, bare interiors of the office building and harmonize with the elements of the construction structures. The exhibition has been organized as a result of cooperation of the Academy of Art in Szczecin, Zachęta Contemporary Art Association, the National Museum in Szczecin and Echo Investment.
“The title of the exhibition – SPORES – has been taken from a work by Piotr Kurka, which enriched the collection last year and so far has not been shown in Szczecin,” emphasizes Agata Zbylut, - “the curator of the exhibition. It is a multi-element sculpture presenting two naked boys holding a showcase with a model of a warship overgrown with poisonous mushrooms. On the boys’ heads there are hats in the shape of mushrooms. The work raises the issue of identicality representing exclusion but also the birth of power in opposition to imitative mechanisms duplicating a myth. Apart from the work by Piotr Kurka it will be possible to see at the exhibition such significant names in Polish modern art as: Natalia LL, Zofia Kulik, Izabella Gustowska, Łódź Kaliska, Elżbieta Jabłońska, Katarzyna Górna and many others.”
All works shown at the exhibition come from the Regional Collection of Zachęta Contemporary Art Association. The collection includes 250 artistic works by 80 artists and constitutes a set that is representative for the Polish art since 1989.

Zachęta Contemporary Art Association was registered in 2004. The impulse for establishing the association was the ‘Signs of Times’ National Cultural Programme announced by Mr Waldemar Dąbrowski, the Minister of Culture, in March 2004. The programme was a response to a long time of neglect regarding modern art collecting in Poland, which resulted in breaking off the social dialogue and weakening intergenerational ties.
Zachęta Contemporary Art Association in Szczecin comprises of art critics, artists, people connected with the local media, economists and lawyers. Our aim is collecting and protecting modern works of art, restoring the tradition of artistic patronage as well as encouragement and support with regard to building private art collections. A significant part of the programme is the preparation of culture and modern art audience.
Thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the West Pomeranian Province and the Municipality of Szczecin we have been building the Regional Collection of the Zachęta Contemporary Art Association. In five years of the association’s operations we have gathered nearly 200 works of art which we have bought or received from 80 artists.
The association also cooperates with the Municipality of Szczecin in order to set up Trafostacja Sztuki Szczecin as a municipal institution of culture.
